Did you know that nations have astrological birth charts? This concept falls under the umbrella of Mundane Astrology. Mundane Astrology reviews historical patterns and natural events such as earthquakes and floods combined with eclipses and other astrological aspects to determine future events and their effects on mankind.

Determining a nation’s point of origin is not without controversy among astrologers. When does a country begin? Is it the start date of a revolution, the implementation of a constitution or signing of declaration of independence? Let’s look at some examples.

Astrologers agree that the United States was born on July 4, 1776 at the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. But the exact timing is historically questionable. Pre 9/11, a Gemini Ascendant, theorized by Evangeline Adams, was in vogue evoking the image of talkative and phone loving, symbolized by double-talking pitchman Uncle Sam. However, since the Twin Tower attack, the Sibly chart for September 11 with transiting Pluto on a Sagittarius Ascendant opposite Saturn in Gemini has challenged the Adams chart. Sagittarius is the most freedom-loving sign and its energy can be seen in the American motto: “Don’t tread on me”. The United States Cancer Sun Sign essence is easily seen in its veneration of motherhood, home, sentimental patriotism, boobs and emotional attachment to food, money and property values. But are we filtering that energy through the scattered patchwork hoodwinking games of Gemini or the blunt extravagant optimistic giant that is Sagittarius?

Countries with centuries-old history are problematic for astrologers. Take for example, Russia. For most of the 20th century, the storming of the Winter Palace which launched the Russian Revolution occurring on November 8, 1917 was considered the Russian (USSR) chart. It gave a Sun in Scorpio with Moon in Leo and Mars in Virgo in the 12th House. The Scorpio Sun essence is visible in the USSR’s obsession with secrecy, in-house surveillance of its own people and controlling aspects of its central government. The Moon and Mars in the 12th House indicates the self-undoing of the USSR and its repressive regime. Astrologers are divided on which chart is accurate for the new Russia formed in 1991. Is it the announcement of Russian independence, known as the Minsk agreement on December 8, 1991 or December 25, 1991 when President Gorbachev formally resigned and the hammer and sickle flag was brought down? Or is it August 24, 1991 when the Supreme Soviet ceased operations and the Communist rule of the nation ended? Current and past crucial events in post-Communist Russia need to be researched and examined to determine the correct chart.

National identity and character has played a significant role in historically assigning a sign to a country. Traditional assignments include: Aries to England and Germany, Taurus to Ireland, Cancer to Scotland, Leo to France and Italy, Virgo to Switzerland and Sagittarius to Australia. Yet governments come and go altering a nation’s energy. The Fifth Republic of France was established on October 4, 1958 giving France a Libran vibration. The national character of France is Leonine but its government is now in diplomatic and artistic Venus-ruled Libra.

Cities, counties, states and even buildings have an incorporation date or birthday. Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876 under Leo. What vibrations are you living and working in?
